Make sure you can run Catalina
First, make sure you can install the new operating system before you begin. Catalina's hardware requirements remain the same as for MacOS Mojave, the current version of the operating system, so if you can run Mojave you can run Catalina. Here are the Macs that meet the requirements:
To check which Mac you have from the Apple menu, select About this Mac. The Overview tab shows which Mac you have.
Before installing Catalina …
Before downloading and installing the MacOS update, make sure the migration to Catalina is as smooth as possible.
Make a backup. Before downloading and installing any major MacOS update, have a good, up-to-date backup of the contents of your Mac device, if anything goes south during installation or thereafter and you need to return. You can either use Mac's built-in Time Machine backup tool or take a Mac backup app like Carbon Copy Cloner.
Know your Apple ID. If you are a Mac user, you probably have an Apple ID. If not, get one, since you will probably need it during the Catalina installation process and log into iCloud.
Check your free space. The download is large – about 6.5 GB – and Apple said you should probably have about 20 GB of free storage to install Catalina.
Update your apps. With Catalina, Apple turns off support for 32-bit apps. What this means is that if you have an older app that you are still using – say Microsoft Office 11 for Mac – check that you have a 64-bit version of the app before moving to Catalina. If not, you will either need to find a replacement or stick to your current macOS so you can continue using the software.

Once you have completed your preparation, you are ready to download and install Catalina.

1. On the Mac App Store, tap Updates in the left sidebar. If Catalina is available, you should see the new operating system. You can also search for 'Catalina' in the store if you do not see it. If that doesn't work, select About the Mac from the Apple menu and press Software Update to see if it appears. If you still don't see it, Apple might make an excessive update, so be patient while it rolls out.
2. Press the Update – or Download – button to download the update.
3. Review the installation instructions to complete the installation.
