  There's a reason why Davinci Resolve is so widely used for color grading in the film and video world. But two words of caution:As your color grading and noise reduction gets to be more complex, the program will tax most Apple laptops. Not for lack of computational horsepower, but because DR relies on your GPU, and most mainstream machines don't have high powered GPU's. Here's where it really hit home for me. I wanted to try Resolve on my Windows machine. It has an OK GPU, or I can cost effectively swap graphics cards. The real problem is that the license via the Apple Store can't be transferred to my Windows machine, but purchased from other sources, I could. So if you ever intend to switch between Mac and Windows, purchase Resolve elsewhere.One side note: More current machines, with Thunderbolt 3 ports, can employ external GPU's. None of my machines have TB3, though I'll likely get a Mac Mini soon, which should be a good solution for both my video and Pro Tools work.One other note- Final Cut Pro works so smoothly on even modest Macs. But you don't get all the advanced color grading features of Davinci.Bottom line- don't buy Davinci here, if you also have Windows machines in your studio.

  The last two updates freeze on “Loading Fairlight” on startup. Keep a copy of 16.2.3 before you upgrade. Don’t do what I did and leave town with a new update because the App store will not let you roll back. I’m unable to work for the next 2 weeks until I get home now.

  Buy this directly from Blackmagic or somewhere where you can get the full version. This does not work with the actual Advanced DaVinci Resolve Panels.This is not explicit in the product details of this app, and Apple will not refund you for this. All we get is: this version 'does not support some external control panels.' That, to me, means third-party hardware..not the premier panels manufactured by the same company.Again, buy this from Blackmagic directly.

Bought this for a job and they needed me to download the Beta (what everyone else working with on project).YOU CANNOT USE BETA WITH THIS VERSION.The program is amazing though. • Beware of two different verisons! App Store version may not work.

  I am updating my previous one-star review with another one-star review that reflects the current App Store version.There are two different delivery media for Davinci Resolve Studio— the App Store and direct sales from BMD. They are NOT the same. I have both versions in my system running side by side with the same settings. The direct sale version works perfectly, the App Store version doens’t work at all, crashing almost immediately upon attempting to perfom even the most basic playback. The program can’t even quit without hanging, even when no project is loaded. I have gone through customer service to no avail—they seem like they don’t believe me when I tell them that I’ve tried every setting, and they seem not to understand when I explain that their free public beta worked flawlessly so it’s not my system that’s the problem. I’ve also found that BMD will not refund or allow me to exchange the defective app store product for the direct sale product that works perfectly. I’m considering taking legal action, either as a class action lawsuit (if other people have had the same problems) or in small claims court. I will update this review appropraitely when I either get a license for the direct sale version or when BMD recognizes that there is a serious discrepancy in its App store software and offers free licenses to those like me who have wasted hours of their time and lots of money on a defective product. Previous one-star review for version 14:This app was functioning fine on my system (Macbook pro 4-core i7, 16GB, 2GB GPU), then it stopped functioning in every major way after the last update. I was able to edit two 4K video streams with VST audio effects and minimal grading, but the app is no longer usable at any resolution. I have attempted every combination of major settings for performance mode, media optimization, and rendering. Nothing has improved the situation. I know that my computer is capable of handling this level of processing—the activity monitor barely reaches half-way on the CPU and 1/4 of my RAM when Davinci crashes. Now, it crashes almost every time I hit the space bar to start playback. It also hangs every time I quit the application, even if I don’t have a project loaded. I will update this review when the next update (hopefully) fixes the problems that the last update created. Becasue this is the app store, I can’t go back to a previous verison.

• BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE

  This version of STUDIO is not the same as the Studio version purchased directly from Blackmagic. It disables certain plugins amoung other things. I spoke with Black Magic and they say I will need to buy another version from them for $300 instead of them just giving me a key to be able to use their official version. They are not putting the same software on the Apple Store as on their own site which is just rediculous and they are not willing to support this version as they would the other Resolve 15.
